Visit 6 Author Homes And Museums Near Rhode Island

Where would you go if you could rent a car for a quick weekend getaway? There are several esteemed American authors with homes open to the public that are less than three hours drive from Providence, Rhode Island. These literary figures have left their mark on history through their writing, and their homes are all in remarkably close proximity to each other – and Providence. Christy’s Car & Truck Rental can provide the vehicle you need for your weekend adventures, including any of these six museums.

1. Louisa May Alcott: Orchard House

She is best known as the author of the beloved American classic, Little Women, but Louisa May Alcott published over 30 books. Orchard House in Concord, Massachusetts was Alcott's family home and it opened to the public as a museum in 1912. You can take guided tours of this home, which has been carefully preserved to maintain the same look it had with the Alcott family living under its roof.

2. Edith Wharton: The Mount

The first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Literature, Edith Wharton's, best-known novel is The Age of Innocence. The Mount was built in 1902 in Lenox, Massachusetts, as a work of art influenced by French, Italian, and English traditions. It will be open again this spring for tours.

3. Emily Dickinson: Emily Dickinson Museum

Emily Dickinson is one of the most important figures in American poetry. Her museum in Amherst, Massachusetts, has just undergone a major restoration and is scheduled to reopen very soon. The museum encompasses two historic homes that are associated with Emily Dickinson and her family.

4. Harriet Beecher Stowe: Harriet Beecher Stowe Center

The author of Uncle Tom's Cabin had a home in Hartford, Connecticut, which has been preserved to showcase her life and work. The center would like to inspire commitment to social justice and positive change. Guests can tour the Stowe House or participate in programs at the Stowe Center.

5. Mark Twain: The Mark Twain House and Museum

The Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford, Connecticut was home to the author of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and other important works that he wrote in that very house. The home is a National Historic Landmark, and guests can take tours or engage in other activities and educational programs.

6. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne: The Old Manse

This Georgian home built in Concord, Massachusetts in 1770, provided inspiration for some of the most distinguished writers in American history. Both Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne lived in the Manse at different points in time. This house is full of history and is open for tours on weekends.
